Prohibition Punch Non-alcoholic is a fun version of its boozy cousin. We like serving it with brunch and coffee for a little extra sparkle.
The first time I made this was for Mother’s Day for the local homeless shelter residents. I needed a drink that was festive yet didn’t contain any alcohol. This Prohibition Punch from *A Question of Death: An Illustrated Phryne Fisher Anthology (Phryne Fisher Mysteries). I also served Virgin Mimosas.
This is a refreshing drink that uses the freshest raspberries in the season. The fruit is at the bottom of the glass. You drink the liquid and then get the berry. The raspberry pops its wonderful juice in your mouth. It’s a wonderful thing.
By putting the raspberries in the freezer for no more than 20 minutes, they make the drink nice and cold. Don’t let them get hard in the freezer.
Ginger ale is actually good for you because it’s made from ginger. Ginger is well known for calming upset stomachs and has other health benefits as well. It’s up to you what brand of ginger ale you want to use. *Vernors is well-known and has a strong flavor. In my personal opinion, the grocery store brand and other brands don’t have as much flavor and will not do as well as the *Vernors.
White grape juice is used in this drink because it is lighter than the purple variety. If you drop some on yourself, it will not stain the way regular grape juice does. It’s also a bit more festive. To make the drink even more festive, use sparkling white grape juice.
This is also called Nursery Fizz. It’s important that the parts are equal, so be sure to note how many ounces each is.
Of course, if you want to make this alcoholic, you are more than welcome to add your favorite liquor. Vodka would be an excellent choice. You could also substitute champagne for white grape juice.
