How to make candy Pixie wings for an edible Tinkerbell, or Fairy for a cake topper or Christmas tree decorations.

Candy pixie wings are a fun project to make for the holidays or any time you need specially shaped candy figures. These candy pixie wings were used for my Marzipan People.

What You Will Need for this Project

  1. Cookie cutter – angel shape with wing
  2. Foil
  3. Scissors
  4. Vegetable Oil – flavorless
  5. Q-tips
  6. Silicon bowls
  7. Hard Candy
  8. Hammer
  9. Waxed Paper
  10. Microwave Oven

Finding A Mold

As I mentioned in a previous post about making pixies for Noelle’s Birthday cake, I looked all over to find a wing mold for the pixie wings. Michaels had a mustache mold, but it was not for hard candy. Finally, I remembered that I had an angel cookie cutter whose wings would probably be just right. My next dilemma was whether to use crushed hard candy or to make hard candy myself. I only needed to make candy for four wings, but I could not find any clear hand candy, so I purchased Jolly Rogers and corn syrup – I could do either one.

Now that the wings are complete, I made the pixies out of marzipan.

Making the Mold

Wings molds
Foil mold from angel cookie cutter

I took my angel and laid foil over my angel’s wing, pressed all around it, and then cut out around it. Since the cutter had the rest of the angel, I pushed that part up so that the mold was sealed on all sides.

I was still not sure if my foil mold would hold the hot syrup, so I oiled one up, crushed a Jolly Rodger, and heated it to melting point in the microwave in one of my silicon prep bowls. I poured it into the mold, and it did just fine! It looked so nice, that I decided to do the wings with the Jolly Roger candy.

Hammer and Candy
Candy crushed by hammer

I put four pieces of a single-color candy on a single sheet of wax paper, then folded it over, and used my hand to seal it off. Then I used a hammer to crush and break up candy. I put the candy into the silicon prep bowls, ready for the microwave.

I used a Q-tip soaked in vegetable oil to oil my molds. It’s very important to oil them well, or your product will not come out once it has set.

Candy in Molds

I put the candy into the microwave for about 50 seconds. Watch it carefully, because if you let it go too long, it will start to caramelize. Check the microwave at 40 seconds, and let it continue at 3-second intervals until the candy is bubbling nicely.

Very carefully, remove the molten candy from the microwave, and pour it into the molds. The picture above shows mine in their molds cooling off before being removed from the molds.

Out of the Mold

After the candies cool off, they need to be wrapped up. Oxygen is your enemy! I wrapped mine up in waxed paper that they will not stick to, and then wrapped that up in foil.

As I was doing this project, I realized that I could make molds out of just about any cookie cutter, fill them with whatever I wanted, and be happy. The possibilities are endless!

  2. Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Opera. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Many thanks

    • I use Opera as my primary browser and have not had this issue. I have tested in Opera, Opera Mini, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. If you could take a screen shot, put it up somewhere on the Internet, and leave me a comment where it is, I would like to see it, and correct the issue. Thanks for the heads up!
