Graham Cracker Pie Crust

Graham cracker crust is useful for so many desserts. I just love being able to make something on a whim. This Graham cracker crust allows me to do that. You can either use the crackers that come whole in a box, or you can get the crumbs. I have a jar of crumbs always in my pantry should the mood strike.

The history of Graham crackers in interesting. The graham cracker was inspired by the preaching of Sylvester Graham, who was part of and strongly influenced by, the 19th-century temperance movement. Graham believed that a lifestyle that involved minimizing pleasure and stimulation of all kinds, and which included a vegetarian diet anchored by bread made from wheat coarsely ground at home, was how God intended people to live, and that following this natural law would keep people healthy.  Find out more about it on Wikipedia.

Ingredients necessary for the recipe step are in italic. Ingredient measurements may vary due to measurement tools used.

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan or the microwave, melt 6 tablespoons of butter.

Whole Crackers

  • There are two methods of making the crumbs:
  • 1, The best way to do this, however, is in a large food processor, just be sure to use the pulse button and pulse the crackers, then add the butter and sugar, and pulse two or three more times before removing and putting into your pie pan.
  • 2. Place about 24 graham crackers in a plastic bag. Roll with a rolling pin until finely crushed. This may be done in small batches. Measure 1 1/2 cups of graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl. Add 1/4 cup of sugar to the graham crackers. Add the melted butter. Stir or blend together with your hands.

Cracker Crumbs

  • Put the cracker crumbs in a bowl with the sugar and melted butter. Mix well so all the crumbs are thoroughly coated.

Make the Crust

  • Finally, press the crumb mixture into the pie plate. Use a straight-edged utensil like a measuring cup to form the crust around the edges, or another pan on top of the one with the crumbs and press down hard to distribute the crumbs.
  • To blind bake the pie crust, bake for 8 to 10 minutes in a preheated 350 F/170 C oven or until the crust just starts to brown.

Notes

You can use other types of cookies to make this crust.  Just make sure they are hard so they will absorb the butter.  Lemon cookies and chocolate cookies are good choices.  Don't use anything like chocolate chip or soft cookies.

Spane having fun with the webcam

This picture is of Spane when he was learning to use the webcam and waiting for me to make a crust for a lemon meringue pie. He hates waiting! Now he is learning to make his own desserts.

  1. Hi – wondering why your website doesn’t have google plus one badges on your blog posts? Out of my own experience on my blogs is that a large percentage of readers are quite content to vote through these because it really is 1 mouse click that is needed. It is a very useful vote to Google about the popularity of every post so that does benefit you a good deal. But simply an idea; Best Regards – Lekisha Baldiviez in Prince George, British Columbia

    • Thanks for the heads up, I wasn’t aware of it until your comment. This theme for some reason doesn’t support it. When Halloween is over, we’ll be going back to the regular theme that does support it.

  2. Good site! I really love how it is easy on my eyes and the data are well written. I am wondering how I could be notified when a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your RSS which must do the trick! Have a nice day!

    • It’s very nice not to have to write a really long URL. The Good Plate used to be at http://adrienneboswell.com and it’s so nice not to have to type that AND the wordpress part as well.
