Takis-Takis Chicken is about to become your new go-to recipe. Juicy chicken breasts are coated with in a fiery crust of crushed Takis, and deliver the ultimate crunch with every bite. Whether you love heat, crave something crispy, or just want to try a fun, flavorful recipe, this dish has it all.
This dish was an experiment that turned out really, really good. We wanted to see if crushed Takis were as good as the crumbled pieces at the bottom of the bag. They were better, and then we had leftover crushed Takis to use for breading chicken.
Takis, the popular rolled tortilla chips known for their extreme heat and tangy lime kick, originated in Mexico. They were created by Barcel, a subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo, and quickly became a snack sensation. Since arriving in the U.S. in the early 2000s, Takis have taken over convenience stores, viral food challenges, and even gourmet recipes.
With flavors like Fuego (hot chili pepper and lime), Nitro (habanero and lime), and Blue Heat (extreme hot pepper), Takis bring a unique crunch and intense spice to any dish. The Fuego variety is the perfect choice for Taki-Taki Chicken, offering a deep red color, bold heat, and a tangy citrusy bite that enhances the crispy breading. But, you can experiment and use other Takis flavors if you want.
How to Make Taki-Taki Chicken
This recipe is so easy to do. If you don’t have a food processor, you can crush the Takis in the bag with a rolling pin or other heavy object, or get your kids to help you. Kids love helping with things like this. Warning – this chicken is not for the faint at heart – if you don’t like spicy foods, you will not like this.
Takis are gluten free. If you are following a gluten-free diet, substitute rice flour for all-purpose flour in the breading mix.
You can also substitute chicken tenders if you want to make this as an appetizer.
The process is simple:
- Crush the Takis – Using a *food processor or leave them in the bag using a *rolling pin, turn the Takis into crumbs.
- Dip the chicken – Coat each piece in flour, then dip it into an egg wash.
- Press into the Takis – Make sure the entire chicken breast is covered in the spicy, crunchy mixture.
- Bake or fry – Bake for in the air fryer or regular oven.
- Serve it up with a creamy dipping sauce—like spicy ranch, chipotle mayo, or garlic aioli—to balance out the heat.
What Serve with Takis-Takis Chicken
A simple vegetable like broccoli would be an excellent choice. You could also do Roasted Vegetables in Balsamic Butter Sauce at the same time you are baking the chicken. Your favorite white wine or beer for adults, or rose lemonade would be nice, too.
