This tarantula costume is so easy to make. You can make it for a child or an adult. For a girl or woman who wants to be a “black widow”, just add some red ribbon in the shape of an hourglass. Have a great Halloween!

Spane decided that he wanted to be a tarantula for Halloween. His school has a policy of no violent costumes and no masks. Well, that’s okay, I made his spider as realistic as I can, and used makeup on his face. He was scary!

Some of you may have noticed that things have been a little slow around here. It’s not that we haven’t been eating, it’s just that I have been extremely busy getting client’s web sites up and running. Last night, I was so tired I didn’t know what to do with myself, and the Monster Mash at the school was today, and I didn’t have Spane’s costume ready. I also thought I needed more stuff, but after a few hours of sleep, I thought about it and realized I already had everything I needed to make his costume.

We already had black leotard pants and a long-sleeved shirt, so it was just a matter of making four additional legs. Even though real spiders have a thorax, I decided that trying to walk around with a cumbersome thorax would be too difficult, so I just had to make the four legs.

I bought some pantyhose knee highs, and stuffed them with bubble wrap, and put a couple of pipe cleaners inside so the legs would bend. Then I sewed the legs together, then sewed them on to the back of the shirt, and tacked them down. When Spane put the costume on and crawled on the floor, he really looked like a spider.

  • 4 pantyhose knee highs black
  • large bubble wrap about 30 inches wide
  • 8 pipe cleaners black
  • thread black
  • leotard top black
  • pants black

  • Cut four bubble wrap strips about 4 inches high. Set aside.
  • Twist the ends of two pipe cleaners together and put them in the center of each of the bubble wrap strips.
  • Roll the bubble wrap into a long cylinder, flap side down so it doesn’t unroll on you.
  • Get a pantyhose knee-high, and put in on over the bubble wrap cylinder, just as if you were putting on socks. Make sure that you bring the sock all the way up so the bubble wrap is covered completely.
  • Pin the end of each “leg”.
  • Sew to close the end of one of the legs. Attach the second leg under the first at a slight angle and sew it together.
  • Get the third leg facing the opposite direction, and sew it to the two already sewn.
  • Put the fourth leg on at a slight angle to the third leg, and sew it on to the whole.
  • Put the shirt on the “victim”, and have the “victim” stand with the back to you.
  • Very carefully, sew the legs onto the shirt, then have the person remove the shirt to complete sewing.
  • Point each of the top legs toward the armpit, and secure it with a pin.
  • Point each of the bottom legs horizontally outward and secure with a pin.
  • Turning the fabric almost inside out, sew the legs onto the shirt where you have pinned them. This will keep the legs from drooping too much.
  • Put appropriate makeup on, and have a spooktacular time!
