What's Cookin'? Starters!

Lemon Fluff Tiramisu
Yeah the appetizer, that's the food we eat before we have our food.
~ Jim Gaffigan

September rolls in still wearing August's heat, the kids are back in school, and somehow that combination makes everyone want to throw a party. This month's theme is starters you can make without turning on an oven or standing over a grill for an hour. Labor Day doesn't have to be laborious. Put something cold in a glass, something bite sized on a plate, and call it done.

If you want an excuse to get a little theatrical about it, September hands you two. Talk Like a Pirate Day lands on the 19th, so nobody blinks if you announce the fruit boats have arrived. And it's Star Trek's 60th anniversary, which means being loud about being a Trekkie is fully sanctioned this month, no red shirt required. This issue leans into both, so pick your holiday, or claim them all.
