Are you ready for the New Year?
After weeks of rich food, cookies masquerading as meals, and “it’s a holiday” portions, January tends to show up asking for a little mercy. Not deprivation, not punishment. Just food that feels better going down and even better an hour later. This month’s choices are about resetting without suffering: soups that are warming and filling, flavors that feel grounded, and a few lighter notes to keep things from getting dull.
January also brings New Year’s Day, Epiphany (Three Kings Day), Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and, toward the end of the month, Lunar New Year. It’s a stretch of time made for staying in, cooking once, and eating well for a few days in a row. These recipes are built for exactly that: healthy enough to feel virtuous, satisfying enough that you don’t feel cheated, and warm enough to make winter behave itself.
You’ll also find this month’s review of the Sourdough Starter Warmer, which is especially helpful as kitchens cool down. I’ve included two product recommendations that make thoughtful, affordable gifts: English Lavender seeds and a holiday two-pack of Kids Cookbooks.
This month, may your kitchen be full, your heart open, and your table wide enough for one more.
