Have ready a Quiche pan that you have greased well with butter.
Melt the butter, and combine it with the brown sugar and breadcrumbs. Dump the whole into the Quiche pan and spread it all out bringing a bit up on the sides.
Filling
Put the cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer. Using the paddle attachment, cream the cream cheese until it is smooth. Add the sugar, cinnamon and mace, and continue to cream until the sugar is thoroughly incorporated. Add the egg and vanilla and beat on medium speed about two minutes.
Pour the filling into the prepared pan, spreading it out with a spatula. Don't worry if some of the crust comes into the filling.
Topping
Peel the apples, core and slice them into thin slices. Arrange the slices in a circular pattern on top of the filling.
First Glaze
Melt the butter and add the spices. Mix thoroughly, and using a pastry brush, brush the glaze on the apples. Be generous.
Put the tart into the oven for 25 minutes. Open the oven door.
Second Glaze
Melt the butter and sugar together, and add the cornstarch. Mix thoroughly.
Paint the top of the tart with the glaze with a pastry brush.
Close the oven door, and bake another five minutes, or until the apples are shiny in appearance.
Remove from the oven and let cool completely before serving.
Notes
Watch carefully for burning.
