Peppermint Cookies with Cherry Center

I really like giving stuff I made in my kitchen to my friends, neighbors, and Spane’s school. So, this year I decided that I was going to give out some of the fudge and cookies that the kids made at the Kid’s Christmas Party on Saturday.

Life has been hectic since then, and Spane really wanted to help me to decorate the Roll Out Cookies. Today was also the last day of school before the winter break, a perfect opportunity to give his teacher and the front office some nice treats.

Halloween 2010 - Spane as a Dragon,and me as a Good Witch

I love the Holidays, and for me, they start at Halloween and end at Easter, with a couple of summer stragglers.   I love decorating, I love that the weather is usually a little chillier.

My favorite holiday is Halloween.  Spane asked me today if Christmas wasn’t my favorite, and I said that Christmas and Easter were very separate Holidays.  Although Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day (All Hallowed), it is a celebration for those who are young at heart.    Children dressed in their most frightening, or most ingenious costume, have fun knocking on doors and asking for a trick or treat.  Adults have fun decorating their homes and get a kick out of some of the children’s costumes.

My friend, Amber, called me on Sunday and said she had taken all the Halloween decorations out of storage and was putting them up.  That inspired me to get my decorations, too, but I had to clean out the garage for two and a half hours before I could get to the decorations at all.  It’s a good thing though, I consolidated a lot of stuff, and donated books and clothing to the Vietnam Veterans.

In light of that, I decided that The Good Plate should dress up for the occasion, too. I found this lovely theme at Holiday Nook.

As the holiday gets closer, I’ll be posting more recipes and craft projects.  But, I can give you a sneak peak at what we might be doing:

White Chocolate Rum Raisin Cookies on a platter

White Chocolate Rum Raisin Cookies, I ate the broken one!

Spane and his class are going on a field trip, and I volunteered to be one of the helping parents. We have to bring a bag lunch, and I decided to bring cookies for the kids.

I really like this recipe because it is so versatile, you can change the add-ins and have a completely different cookie every time. The add-ins for these White Chocolate Rum Raisin Cookies are the rum, raisins, white chocolate and walnuts.

It was cold in Glendale, and Accuweather said that it might even snow on Saturday, so I thought it would be a good idea to have soup for dinner on a cold rainy night. It was Friday, so that also meant no meat. I also wanted something fun to eat with the soup, and wontons sounded like a plan.

Spane's Religious Education Class Picture taken 2011

Spane's class picture, 2011

May 12, 2010 was Spane’s last day in Catechism for the year. It was also the May Crowning at our parish.

Maria had asked me weeks ago if we were going to have anything special for the children, like we did for Christmas. Last week when I saw Sandra, and she mentioned that she was going to BUY cookies for a gathering after class. I told her to not buy cookies, that I would happily make cookies and bring them. Since I knew it would be the May Crowning, I thought that flowers would be appropriate.

To become a good cook requires more than the blind following of a recipe… To become a good cook means to gain a knowledge of foods and how they behave, and skill in manipulating them. The recipe by itself, helpful as it is, will not produce a good product; the human being using the recipe must interpret it and must have skill in handling the materials it prescribes. ~ American Woman’s Cookbook edited by Ruth Berolzheimer, Director Culinary Arts Institute, Chicago, Illinois.
